There are certain prescription medications that can be effective in minimizing the frequency of migraines. They are:

OnabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX®)

  • Dosage: Every three months (12 weeks)

Pain Relievers for Mild to Moderate Migraines

Ibuprofen (e.g., ADVIL® Liqui-Gels)
  • Potential side effects: pain in the abdomen, acid reflux, feelings of nausea or vomiting, abdominal swelling, irregular bowel movements (either diarrhea or constipation), ringing or buzzing sensations in the ears, heightened nervousness, difficulty sleeping, changes in vision or dizziness, skin itching, fluid retention, skin rashes, redness, blistering, presence of blood in vomit, and the occurrence of bloody or dark stools.
  • Potential side effects: nausea and vomiting, stomach discomfort or pain, bruising, gastrointestinal bleeding, allergic reactions, hearing loss, ringing or buzzing in the ears, or bleeding may occur.
  • Potential side effects: adverse responses such as wheezing, rash, or itching may occur due to an allergic reaction. Exceeding the recommended daily dosage could lead to significant and potentially life-threatening liver damage.
  • Potential side effects: adverse responses such as wheezing, rash, or itching due to allergies, along with an accelerated heart rate, nervousness, and difficulty sleeping, may occur. Triptans (Medications That Act as Serotonin Receptor Agonists for Moderate to Severe Migraines)

Sumatriptan (IMITREX®)
  • Potential side effects: discomfort, tension, or constriction in any area of the body (including the chest and throat); heavy feeling, peculiar sensations like numbness and tingling, sensations of heat/burning or cold, momentary flushing (temporary redness of the face), potential nausea or vomiting, bouts of dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, weakness, and irregular or rapid heartbeats.
  • Potential side effects: feelings of discomfort such as pain, pressure, or constriction in the chest, neck, throat, jaw, arms, or legs, accompanied by sensations like tingling, warmth, heaviness, or pressure. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, muscle weakness, aches, and pains, along with difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, headaches, stomach discomfort, sensations inside the nose or nosebleeds if using nasal spray, and irregular or fast heartbeats.
  • Potential side effects: dry mouth, along with sensations of pain, pressure, or tightness in the chest, neck, throat, jaw, arms, or legs, tingling, heat, heaviness, or pressure sensations, headache, dizziness, fatigue, muscle pain, nausea or vomiting, drowsiness, and irregular or rapid heartbeats may be experienced.
  • Potential side effects: feeling nauseous, sleepy, dizzy, experiencing tingling sensations, headaches, dry mouth, shortness of breath, wheezing, heart palpitations, elevated blood pressure, rapid heart rate, or irregular heartbeats.
  • Potential side effects: experiencing discomfort such as pain, pressure, or tightness in the chest, neck, throat, jaw, or arms; breathing difficulties, including wheezing and heart palpitations; swelling of the face, lips, or eyelids; skin reactions like rash, lumps, or hives; weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, tingling sensations, trouble swallowing, nausea, and stomach cramps.
  • Potential side effects: feelings of pain or pressure in the chest, throat, neck, or jaw; dizziness; fatigue; non-migraine headaches; tingling sensations; numbness; sensation of heat or cold; allergic reactions.
  • Potential side effects: experiencing sensations such as chest heaviness, pressure, tightness, or pain, along with symptoms like dizziness, drowsiness, ear, nose, and throat infections, nausea, vomiting, headaches, dry mouth, and feelings of numbness, tingling, heat, or pain in various body parts, including the chest, neck, jaw, and throat. Additionally, one may feel tingling, warmth, or flushing, accompanied by a general sense of sickness and fatigue.

If acute treatment medications and lifestyle adjustments prove insufficient, migraine preventive therapy could be considered. To make your treatment work best, take your prescribed medication as soon as you feel symptoms. Using medication more often than advised can cause problems and more headaches
